What size speakers do I need?

PA system speakers are typically 8, 10, 12, or 15 inches. Generally the larger the speaker, the lower the frequencies they can handle.

For Medium Bands (typically one or two guitars, bass and drums, vocalist and maybe a keyboard) we'd normally recommend 12" speakers, but if your style of music is on the heavy side and you are planning to mic up the bass through the PA, then you should consider 15" speakers.

What should we get?

Our recommendations are:

Size

Recommendation

8 inch Fine for speech
10 inch Fine for speech, background music and just vocals
12 inch Vocals, acoustic guitar, CD player, light keyboards, small/med venues
15 inch Anything else.... especially if you are miking up the bass or kick drum

Don't forget to look ahead!
When you're deciding what to buy don't forget to look ahead. You want to make sure that the gear you buy now can easily be upgraded when your band is successful and you're playing larger gigs! Venues such as clubs and halls should plan ahead too - you might only be doing quiz nights now, but what about in 2 year's time? You don't need to buy more gear now, just make sure that what you do buy can be added to and expanded upon in years to come, and that's where we can help.
